Pinterest Facebook Twitter Email By: Ruth Meharg Related To: Christmas Decorating Holiday Decorating Christmas Design 101 Outdoor Remodel Accessories How To Ornaments DIY Christmas Light Balls Create your own giant, glowing yard ornaments this year with chicken wire and strings of Christmas lights. These beautiful balls of light are perfect for any yard, garden or front porch display. Hang them, stack them or place them by a pond for stunning night reflections. Supplies To make your Christmas light yard ornaments you will need: chicken wire; Christmas lights; wire cutters; work gloves and a tape measure. You may also want needle nose pliers and extra wire for securing the lights. Measuring Your Wire Step one is measuring and cutting your chicken wire. You want to begin you ball with a square, so measure out your wire the same length in each direction. The diameter of your final ball will be about half the size of your square, so if you cut a 4 foot square of chicken wire you will get a 2 foot ball when you are done. Beginning Shaping Begin by taking two corners of the square, opposite each other on the diagonal, and bringing them together. Overlap the corners by about 2 inches and use the cut ends of the wire to connect the two corners. You should have a tube shape. Create a Square Fold the remaining two corners in toward the middle and secure. You should have a puffy square shape. Shaping the Ball Push the corners into the square to begin shaping your ball. Once all four corners are in, you should have a roughly round shape. Use your gloved hands and pliers to shape the ball into a sphere. It doesn't have to be perfect, just close to round. Fold Exposed Wires Once your ball is shaped, fold all exposed wire ends in toward the ball so you don't cut yourself while moving it later. You can use your fingers, or pliers for the hard to reach places. Before You Wrap Before you begin wrapping the lights, make sure the pronged end of your lights is sticking out of the ball. Wrap it once around the chicken wire, or secure it with the extra wire. Then start wrapping the rest of the lights around. Wrapped Lights Wrap the light strands around your ball, trying to cover the surface as evenly as possible. If you need to connect strands for longer lights, try to connect the plugs inside the ball. We used 300 lights to wrap a 2 foot ball. Secure the Lights If the lights are a little loose in spots, use extra wire to secure the strands to the chicken wire. Simply twist the wire around both the chicken wire and the lights. Display Once your lights are done, all you need to do is find the perfect place to display them, and plug them in. Hang your lights from plant hangers, tree branches, or just place them on the ground in your yard or garden. Be sure to follow any voltage instructions on the lights so you don't overload your outlets. Mantel Lights If you're looking for another use for your Christmas light balls, try creating a mantel display with them. Hang them above your mantle or rest them on the shelf for a beautiful, glowing display. Colors on the Lawn You can use any color lights for your Christmas light ornaments. If you have time to make a few balls you can create a whole rainbow of colors for your lawn. You can use them again and again every year. Many times found in holiday light shows, botanical gardens, and other elegant displays, Christmas light balls are actually easy to make with just a few supplies. Based on the popularity of our How to Make Outdoor Christmas Decorations blog post, we want to offer more detailed instructions on creating Christmas light balls with our bright LED Christmas lights. How to Make Christmas Light BallsRequired MaterialsFirst, gather your supplies. For this project, you'll need chicken wire, small wire cutters, a measuring tape, gloves, and our LED mini lights.Measure the Chicken WireRoll out the chicken wire and measure out the dimensions. To create a spherical shape, the chicken wire must be twice as long as it is wide. We are creating a 2′ Christmas light ball, so our chicken wire was 2′ x 4′.Cut Chicken WireCut the chicken wire at the measured area. Because chicken wire can be sharp and hard to handle, gloves come in handy when manipulating the wiring.Put Sides TogetherOnce the chicken wire is cut, place the two cut sides together and connect by twisting the wires around each other.Twist Wire to HoldAs you can see in this picture, we created a bond by twisting the wire.Create CylinderNow you'll have a cylinder of chicken wire. This is where the shaping process begin.Shape into BallBegin pushing the cylinder's sides together and twisting the wire together. Pleating as one would cloth, or folding the circle into each other, begins to create the round shape. Snip the wire with the wire cutters and twist it together to make sure it will hold.Round into ShapeContinue to sculpt the chicken wire to make it as round as possible. Pushing in the curves and pulling on the ends helps to create a more spherical shape.Leave Male Plug ExposedOnce the ball is completely spherical, it's time to wrap with lights. Take your first string and wrap so that the male plug is exposed. This allows for the chicken wire ball to be plugged in and to power it.Wrap with LightsWrap the lights around the ball, in and out of the wire, to secure it. When one string has gone as far as it can go, plug the next string in to create end-to-end runs. For this 2′ ball, we used 3 LED light strings for added brightness, however a good rule of thumb is to use (1) 70ct 5mm LED Light string per every 1 ft of diameter.  Once the lights are fully wrapped around the chicken wire ball, it's ready to be plugged in.Christmas Light BallsThe green Christmas light ball is 2′, while the blue Christmas light ball is 4′. Create more with other color LED lights in several different sizes to create an entire garden of Christmas light balls. Then just sit back and enjoy. These Christmas light balls are amazing when lit together. If you want to craft something new with your kids or just to update your old decor, learn how to make these beautiful Christmas tree ornaments! Styrofoam balls provide the perfect basis and are available in different sizes.  You can either pin or glue the decorations on the soft styrofoam surface and use various materials such as buttons, sequins, felt, pearl beads etc. Creativity knows no limits!Homemade Christmas tree ornaments with colorful buttons and small pearls Materials:– styrofoam ball – 3 inch/8 cm in diameter– assorted buttons– pins and small pearl beads (or you can use ready bead head pins)– scissors– waxed thread in nude color– big needle– hot glue gun– ribbon bow.Cut 15 inch/40 cm of waxed thread and thread on needle. Pass the needle through the styrofoam ball from side to side. On the bottom, thread and tie a button. Then reattach the thread on the needle and back through the ball in the opposite direction. Above, form a loop, tie a knot to secure and cut the leftover thread.Thread the pearls on the pins. Put a button on the styrofoam ball and put the pins in the holes, locking the button on the ball in the two holes. Then, continue pinning the other buttons until the entire surface of the ball is covered with buttons.  You can overlay the buttons, as well. To finish, add a beautiful bow with a pin or hot glue. Unique Christmas tree ornaments – "Artichoke style"Materials:– 63 6 x 6 cm squares of 100% cotton fabric– scissors– hot glue gun– styrofoam ball of 3 inch/8 cm in diameter– pins– ribbon bowCut 62 squares of cotton fabric, 6cm x 6cm each. Take the styrofoam ball and place one fabric square on the top, securing with four pins, one on each end of the square. Take 60 squares and wrap them in half, forming a triangle. Fold them again, forming a smaller triangle.Take a triangle and place on the ball, pinning it at both ends, in one of the corners of the square. Continue to place the triangles in all corners. Then go in between, until finishing the ball, always fixing the triangles with two pins. At the end, you will need the last square to fill the pattern on styrofoam. Take a square of fabric, create a very small hem on all four sides. For a perfect finish, attach the square to the ball with the pin inside the hem.Make a loop with the thread and fix it on the ball using the hot glue gun. To finish, fix the bow at the top of the ball. "Rustic style" Christmas tree ornaments arranged with mini pineconesMaterials:– styrofoam ball of 6 cm in diameter– mini pinecones or other dried floral supplies (these are Casuarina equisetifolia, Australian Pine, Ironwood pinecones)– white craft glue– twine thread– scissors– big needle– toothpicks– gold spray paintTake 12 inch/30 cm of twine cord and cut it with the scissors. Thread the needle and pass it through the styrofoam ball, crossing from side to side. Turn backwards, forming a loop, and double-knot. Make a hole using a toothpick. Take the mini pinecones, dip the handle in the white glue and put in the hole, fixing it to the ball.Repeat the process until you have covered the entire ball. Spray the golden spray paint over the ball. To finish, tie a bow with twine to the hanging loop.Diy Christmas ball ornaments with sequin trim decorationMaterials:– styrofoam ball – 3 inch/ 8 cm in diameter– 10 m of sequin trim – gold– golden thread– scissors– hot glue gun– organza ribbon bowTake the styrofoam ball and make a line of hot glue. Place the sequin yarn over the glue, circling the entire ball. Repeat with second line in the same direction. Then glue the sequin yarn in the other direction, forming a cross.Cover the entire ball with the strands of sequin trim until the styrofoam is completely concealed. Finish by making a hanging loop out of the golden thread and gluing it on the ball. Attach the bow and it is ready.Diy "Honey bee" felt Christmas tree ornaments with gold beadsMaterials:– red felt– golden beads– red thread– needle– 6 inch/15cm thin ribbon lace trim (white with red hearts)– scissors– 5 inch/12cm of circle template– bowFold the felt fabric six times. Transfer the 5 inch/12 cm circle template on the folded felt fabric. Cut out the circles with the scissors over the line. You will have 12 felt circles.Make a loop from the 6 inch/15 cm ribbon trim and place it in the middle of the felt circles stack (2×6 circles), leaving 2 -3 inches (5 to 7 cm) of the handle out. Sew a line in the center of the circumference, securing all of them together.Combine two by two layers and secure with pins. It should look like a six pointed star. Then, sew the golden beads to create the honey comb pattern. Start with two beads up, two down and one in the middle. Continue until all felt layers are connected with beads. To finish sew the bow on the hanging loop.
